U.S. #UX47 Mint 'ONE CENT ADDITIONAL PAID'
Scott catalog notes that the surcharge was appplied to 750,000 cards for use of the General Electric Co. All known examples have a printed advertisement on the back and a small punch hole near lower left corner.
This card bears the Type 2 surcharge, with the D of PAID beneath the N of ADDITIONAL and smudges from the surcharge ink over the ebdicia. Note that the image in the United Postal Stationery Postal Card Catalog bears this same smudge, and is a defining characteristic of the Type 2 Surcharge
The Post Office Department had decided not to revalue cards when the rate was changed in 1958. However, General Electric Co. had purchased 750,000 cards and had them imprinted with advertising, so a special revaluing was authorized for these 750,000 cards only. The existance of these cards did not come to the attention of collectors until much later, so only a limited number were salvaged, thus the scarcity today.
All copies are printed on the back. The small hole punched near the lower left corner was to allow for attaching the card to television sets as 'filling hole' for customers after receiving the card.
