Collecting The Stamps of Faroe Islands

The name of the islands, Føroyar, means "Sheep Islands". Norsemen settled the islands in the 800s, and the name derives from old Norse.

For generations, the islands were isolated and self-sustaining. In the 1800s the emergence of industrial fisheries led to the Faroe Islands becoming part of the international economy.

In 1974–75, the Danish postal system began issuing stamps captioned FØROYAR. The first Faroese postage stamps followed on 30 January 1975. Today The Islands produce stamps favored by collectors for their bold colors and artistry.
