Chinese New Year Stamps
The USPS began a tradition of issuing stamps in celebration of the Chinese New Year in 1972 with the Year of the Rooster issue. The Chinese New Year is the most important social holiday for the Chinese American community and enjoyed by all Americans.
Originally tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar, the Chinese New Year period began in the middle of the 12th month and ended around the middle of the first month with the waxing of the full moon. A time to honor family an ancestor, the holiday is an occasion to bring family together for feasting. And a time for issuing a long-running series of beautiful, artful stamps.
