Mae Weigand Hand Painted Cachets

Possibly the best known and most prolific artists to produce handpainted postal covers, Mae Weigand began her work in the early 1940's and, in addition to First Day Covers, produced many patriotic covers in support of the war effort. A search of the web will show many Wegland Covers, including auction lots from the caliber of Robert A. Siegel auctions.

The tone can be harsh, as these were times of war:

WATCH OUT TOJO:
Though East may be East, and West may be West,
The 'twain' is damn soon gonna meet...
And when that day comes, those cold-blooded bums
Will go down in bitter defeat.

These call for war are then followed with the covers of hope for peace with the initial rumblings of a United Nations.
